The Party of National Unity has postponed the Alternative United Government’s five-day tour of Meru and Isiolo counties that had been scheduled to run from May 20 to May 24, citing the ongoing nationwide fuel crisis.
Party leader Peter Munya announced on Wednesday that the opposition tour will now take place from June 4 to June 8.
Speaking during a press conference, Munya said the decision was made in solidarity with Kenyans struggling with the rising cost of fuel and the high cost of living, which he blamed on the policies of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
The former Cabinet Secretary said the opposition had opted to give room for ongoing negotiations aimed at addressing high fuel prices, expressing hope that the talks would be concluded within a week.
“It is unfortunate, but we have decided to reschedule our united opposition rallies meant to sell our policies to the people of Meru and Isiolo counties because we think we have to give time to the negotiations on the current high fuel prices,” said Mr Munya.
He accused the government of imposing excessive taxes and failing to address the economic hardships facing Kenyans, describing the situation as unsustainable.
Munya further criticized the administration over what he termed as the mismanagement of public resources, rising debt levels, closure of businesses and increased taxation, warning that the country risks slipping into a deeper economic crisis before the next General Election.
He said the opposition hopes the ongoing negotiations will result in lower and more manageable fuel prices, adding that the postponement of the rallies was intended to allow the process to proceed without political distractions.
