Journalists in Tharaka Nithi have condemned the burning of a vehicle belonging to Getu FM reporter Kimathi Ntumiru during chaos that erupted at Nembure in Embu County on Saturday.
The vehicle was among about 10 vehicles torched during an incident that disrupted a political meeting attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
The journalists have called on security agencies to expedite investigations into the incident and ensure those responsible are apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Chuka/Igambang’ombe Press Group Chairman Blaise Gitonga said journalists were neutral in political matters and should be allowed to discharge their duties without intimidation, threats or attacks.
“Journalists do not support any side of politicians. We only do our work and should be allowed to report freely without fear or intimidation,” Gitonga said.
His sentiments were echoed by journalist Kanini Kimandi, who called on members of the public to respect other people’s property and allow leaders and citizens to express their views peacefully.
Kimandi said political differences should not be used to justify attacks on people or destruction of property, noting that citizens ultimately have the responsibility of deciding their preferred leaders through the ballot.
The journalists further demanded justice for Ntumiru and urged authorities to ensure the safety of media practitioners covering political events, particularly as the country heads towards the 2027 General Election.
The incident comes amid heightened political activities in the region, with journalists warning that attacks targeting media workers or their property could undermine the freedom of the press and the public’s right to access information.
