An explosion in Mradi area, Embakasi, has claimed the lives of three individuals and left 222 others injured.
The tragedy unfolded at Kentainers Company Limited, near Kabansora, where a loaded gas lorry exploded, triggering a massive fire that engulfed nearby Oriental mills’ godowns.
Embakasi East OCPD Wesley Kimeto confirmed that one adult and a minor succumbed to burns at 4.30 am.
Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura in a statement revealed that the victims were undergoing treatment at Nairobi West Hospital.
Mwaura stated that the fire, which originated from the gas explosion, rapidly spread, damaging Oriental Godown, several vehicles, and nearby commercial properties.
Residential houses in the vicinity also caught fire, compounding the disaster.
A total of 222 individuals were injured, with 21 at Kenyatta National Hospital, 160 at Mama Lucy General Hospital, 19 at Mbagathi Hospital, 14 at Modern Komarock Hospital, and 8 at Nairobi West Hospital.
The government, through Mwaura, expressed sincere condolences to the bereaved families and assured ongoing efforts to assist victims and restore normalcy in the affected area.
A command center has been established to coordinate rescue operations and intervention efforts, with a plea for Kenyans to stay clear of the cordoned area to minimize disruptions.
