Kanyaga and Mugwii day secondary schools in Tharaka South Sub County in Tharaka Nithi County have benefited with Sh60 million for the construction of dormitories by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development through the Kenya Slum Upgrading Programme (KENSUP).
Mr Paul Mugambi and Peter Karanja from the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government led a team that included officials from the Kenya Slum Upgrading Programme (KENSUP) in launching the projects aimed at improving the living standards of the students.
Speaking during the exercise, Mr Mugambi said the two projects will take strictly six months and urged the contractors to ensure value for the money and the local youths are hired as casuals.
He said each of the modern dormitories will accommodate 130 students which will be a big boost to the schools.
“The two dormitories which we have launched today and which will be complete in six months will accommodate 130 students each will cost a total of Sh60 million,” said Mugambi.
Mr Mugambi who unsuccessfully vied for the senatorial seat in the county’s last general elections said KENSUP is also constructing Maweni Training Institute in Chiakariga Sub-County and constructed a modern open-air market at Kibunga market some years back.
The official asked the locals to continue supporting Interior CS Prof Kithure Kindiki, Tharaka MP Gitonga Murugara and President William Ruto’s government in order to deliver the promises.
The National Government Constituency Development Fund Tharaka constituency manager, Mr Paul Kirema alias Nthungumbuthu asked the contractor to consider giving the local people jobs and only to outsource only the skills which are not locally available.
He also insisted that the local people can also be contracted to deliver building materials where possible so that they can also benefit from the project.
He noted that despite the NGCDF constructing infrastructure in several schools, there is still a shortage and lauded the support by KENSUP.
Mr Norman Musoti, a KENSUP official said government will not tolerate shoddy work and asked the contractor to ensure there is value for money in the buildings.
Marimanti Ward Administrator, Fred Kiriri lauded the good working relationship between the national and county government leadership in the devolved unit.
He said together with the chief and area MCA they will keep watch on the progress of the projects and encouraged the locals to own them.
