Tharaka Nithi Police Commander Ms Donatha Chari and Chuka OCS Ms. Francisca Mbithe have been transferred, Eastern Regional Commander David Rono has this evening confirmed.
He announced this while addressing residents in Chuka town after an indoor meeting with local leaders led by Chuka Igamba Ng’ombe Mp Patrick Munene and his Maara counterpart Kareke Mbiuki and security officers following the death of two people that has led to series of riots in the town.
The residents accused the police of laxity in investigation of the murder of Daniel Mutembei a resident of Nkwego village which prompted the demonstrations with the family and friends blocking the Meru- Nairobi highway at Chuka Town with the casket that had his remains on Saturday.
The second death occured after a police officer who opened fire to disperse the angry crowd killing Tharaka Nithi Boda Boda Association Chairman Willys Mugambi aka Kiraku on the spot.
During his address at Chuka Town, on Sunday, area Mp Patrick Munene linked the OCS with the murder of the youthful boda boda chairman claiming he was a target for fighting illicit brew in Chuka Town, and the OCS who was accused of protecting the brewer was not happy.
His colleagues also claimed the brewer had even threatened the chairman who reported at the police station but nothing was done.
Regional Commander assured the victims’ family and residents that the two murders were under investigation including the police who shot Mugambi, who would soon be identified, arrested and charged.
“The police have not refused to make arrest, people were arrested and taken to court which gave orders but we have consulted, the files are already and all those involved in the murder of Mutembei will also be appearing in court,” he assured the families.
While seeking justice for the two families, the area Mp Patrick Munene also called upon the regional commander to investigate a series of mysterious disappearance of people in Kiang’ondu location where the boda boda chairman hailed from.
“Commander our problems are many and we ask you not to spare even the County commander, go with her because rarely are any arrests or follow ups made, just money exchanging hands,” vented the Mp.
Meanwhile residents and boda boda operators continue with the demonstrations which are now on the 4th day calling for the arrest of the police officer who killed the chairman.
