Tharaka Nithi Njuri ncheke council of elders in conjunction with the county and the national governments have launched rehabilitation of Kiera hills through planting of trees.
During the launch, the three parties planted at least 1800 trees and prmosed this to be a routine activity especially during the current rainy season.
The council chair Mr Morris Ngai Kanampiu said they will be spearheading this exercise in various places within the county to contribute to President William Ruto’s target of planting at least 15billion trees by 2032.
Kanampiu said the trees will go a long way in contributing to environmental conservation.
He requested residents to plant more trees and make sure that anyone who cuts a tree plants to enhance continuity.
Speaking during the event, Maara Sub county administrator Boniface Kainga said that the county government is supporting planting of trees and they have started planting trees in markets and along the highways.
He also requested them to support the road marshalls that are planting trees along the roads rather than than cutting them.
Apart from planting, Mr Kainga said they will be making follow ups to ensure the trees are well maintained.
“Every resident should plant at least ten trees which will also address the issue of water shortage,” said Mr Kainga.
Former Chuka University Vice Chancellor Chuka University Professor Erastus Njoka who attended the event said the council supports the government of the day and they are ready to support all the government programs for prosperity.
