A Kenya Airforce helicopter involved in the distribution of food aid in Wajir County crashed at the runway immediately after taking off injuring the three occupants.
Confirming the evening accident, Kenya Defense Forces Spokesperson Col Zipporah Kioko said three occupants, Capt Kiroken Kigen, Capt James Ndirangu and Arabajahan ward representative Mr Abey Jimaale sustained injuries and were rushed to Wajir County Referral Hospital before they were referred to Nairobi for further treatment.
She said officers from Wajir Airport Police Station responded to the scene of the incident and secured it until it was documented by scenes of crime personnel and then condoned off awaiting accident investigators.
“The aircraft was extensively damaged and the occupants sustained head and shoulder injuries and are receiving treatment in stable condition,” said Col Kioko
The second helicopter, a civilian one crushed immediately after taking off to pick up KCSE examination papers.
Also confirming the incident, North Eastern Regional Commissioner John Otieno said the aircraft developed mechanical issues crushing injuring three people.
Questions have been raised over the sorry state of military aircraft following a series of accidents that have left several occupants killed and others injured.
