The government will convert select schools into sports academies in line with Competency Based Curriculum.
Speaking during the launch of this year’s KSSSA national competition in Kakamega, State Department for Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr Belio Kipsang noted the Ministry had already identified schools to be converted into sports academies, with Kakamega School, Lenana School, St Patrick’s Iten among other schools have been identified already.
“The Ministry has already identified schools which will be converted into sports academies even as Kenya hopes of hosting Afcon 2027 and World under 19 athletics games this year”, he said.
According to the PS, the government through the sports fund will partner with Kenya Sports Academy in funding all national sports games to ensure more talent is tapped and nurtured.
“ This will give rooms for schools to produce more heroes to emulate sports legends like Mariga, Wanyama, Faith Kipyegon among others,” noted Dr Kipsang.
The Ministry of Sports in partnership with Kenya Academy of Sports announced plans to increase to the number of teams participating in East African Secondary School games to three from the initial two teams in an effort to boost the level of sports in the country.
Dr Kipsang applauded teachers for incorporating co-curriculum activities in line with new CBC requirements.
He further stated that through the close collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry Of Youth Affairs, The Arts and Sports, talents in the sports and the creative arts were receiving supports towards unleashing their full potential.
“The Ministry of Youth Affairs, The Arts and Sports through its Sports fund have injected over 267 million shillings to support talent in music, Drama and Sports in our schools. This has had a huge positive impact on our students and teaching fraternity involved in the management of these activities. It is a great motivator for our players, the referees and Coaches, raises the standards of our competition and signifies the Government’s commitment to support them,” noted Dr. Kipsang
