Governor Muthomi Njuki has announced plans by the County Government of Tharaka Nithi in collaboration with the National Government to roll out biogas plants in schools as part of mitigation efforts to reduce greenhouse emissions that cause global warming.
Speaking during the commissioning of a biogas plant at Kimuchia Secondary School in Maara Constituency, the governor said plans are underway to expand the program to other schools in the county.
The biogas plant worth KShs 6.5 million was financed by the National Treasury under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLOCA) program.
“This is a pilot project. We will introduce it to all schools in Tharaka Nithi once we monitor the progress and success of the project. Using FLLOCA, as a government we have agreed to try and mitigate the effects of climate change. We are committed to take climate change action which is locally led”, Governor Njuki said.

In addition, the Governor noted that human activities had majorly led to the release of dangerous emissions, causing global warming and climate change, proposing mitigation measures such as transitioning to renewable energy, protecting and restoring forests.
“The world is nor grappling with the effects of climate change. The conversation is centered around suggestions to mitigate the global threat since we are at risk”, he added.
According to Kimuchia Secondary School Principal Mrs. Mary Mua, renewable energy will not only reduce dependency on firewood but also promote waste management and economic empowerment.

Notably, the school head highlighted that the initiative aligns with environmental conservation efforts and engages the students in lessons about sustainability and innovation.
“The reduction of fuel costs means that more resources can be channeled towards education programs and student development. The project has created an opportunity for practical learning especially for students with interests in science, technology and environmental studies”, Mrs Mua said.
The school also benefitted from the renovation of kitchen cooking units, cow shed construction and donation of cattle under the project.
