Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has called for the appointment of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as Deputy President if Rigathi Gachagua is impeached.
Governor Njuki has argued that the seat belonged to the Mt Kenya East political wing and it would only be fair if the region maintained the position.
In his address to residents during a seed distribution exercise in the county on Wednesday, Governor Njuki found fault with a section of leaders from Mt Kenya West, who maintain that CS Kindiki and his Mt Kenya East backyard do not have enough numbers politically.
“We have for long been sidelined and accused of not having enough numbers. If Gachagua will be impeached, which is likely, let Kindiki be installed as the next Deputy President. If the seat was meant for Mt Kenya, let it return to Mt Kenya”, he said.
Njuki noted that Kindiki had been picked by a majority of political leaders for the Deputy President position in the 2022 elections, and that he was the right candidate to replace Gachagua now that an opportunity had presented itself.
“CS Kithure Kindiki received the most support to be President Ruto’s running mate in the 2022 general elections. We were told that he wouldn’t mobilize enough votes against Azimio’s Martha Karua in Mt Kenya and we settled for Gachagua. Right now we are not going into elections and Kindiki fits to be the next second in command”, he added.
In his speech, Njuki defended Members of Parliament from the county who voted in favor of the Impeachment motion in the National Assembly, saying there was nothing the MPs would have done to save Gachagua, whose rocky relationship with President William Ruto seems to have worsened.
