Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki has ordered closure of primary and secondary day schools in Nairobi and Mombasa towns due to the planned Azimio anti-government demonstrations.
In a statement on Tuesday evening, Prof Kindiki said the government has received credible security
intelligence that criminal elements planning to
unleash terror and violence on the public
tomorrow intend to engage in armed skirmishes
with security agencies around certain schools
within the two cities.
“As a precautionary measure to ensure the safety
of school children, it has been decided that all
day primary and secondary schools within
Nairobi and Mombasa cities shall remain closed
tomorrow,” read in part the statement.
The CS noted that Ministry of Education shall announce the
resumption of learning in the aforesaid schools
upon assessment of the security situation in the
course of tomorrow.
Azimio leaders led by Raila Odinga have maintained that the demonstrations will go on from tomorrow until Friday despite government declaring it illegal.
The demonstrators are blaming President William Ruto’s government of making life unbearable due to economic hardship.
