Police in Chogoria took decisive action against illicit and counterfeit alcohol, seizing various brands of 2nd generation alcoholic drinks from a rental residential premises in Chogoria Town.
Ms. Caroline Kaari, believed to be the owner of the alcoholic drinks depot, was apprehended in connection with the illegal operation.
Tharaka Nithi Police Commander, Mr. Zacheaus Ng’eno, confirmed the arrest and highlighted the discovery during routine inspections. Despite the premises being registered as a wines and spirits shop, authorities uncovered the presence of KEG, a product of East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL), without the necessary licenses.
Furthermore, Mr. Ng’eno revealed that the establishment violated the Alcoholic Drinks Act by operating as both a store and a residence for families. He pledged relentless efforts to combat illicit and counterfeit alcohol trade, emphasizing the importance of adhering to prescribed regulations, especially regarding operating hours for bars.
This crackdown follows the County Government of Tharaka Nithi’s initiative in February 2024 to inspect all liquor business premises across sub-counties. The objective is to ensure compliance with regulations and facilitate the issuance of 2024 licenses and permits.
