The County Government of Nyamira on Wednesday 21 June 2023 launched a programme that uses drones to distribute drugs and medical supplies.
Speaking during the launch, Governor Amos Nyaribo said the drones will help deliver supplies quickly, shortening the time it takes to get the medical essentials to those in need of it.
The drones will be used to deliver medicines, blood vaccines and other emergency needs from the drug depot in Chemilil, Kisumu County to public hospitals.
Nyamira County Health CEC Dr Ombati Mokua noted that the technology will help reduce the cost of supplying the medical essentials to the public where vehicles sometimes are unable to access.
Reports indicate that drones are increasingly being used to deliver essential health supplies in remote areas with drone suppliers keen to expand into the health sector.
In Rwanda, drones have been operating in the country for six years, helping deliver life-saving blood and medical supplies to 12 regional hospitals.
The drones have completed over 40 million miles worth of flying in Rwanda.
