The National police service is not ready to apologise over the dramatic arrest of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza on Wednesday at Ruiga in Imenti Central where he had gone to donate a cow to a needy family.
The council of governors, in a press statement by Vice Chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi called upon the Inspector General (IG) of police to issue a public apology to Governor Mwangaza for embarrassment, inconvenience, public humiliation, and ridicule that she was subjected to by the police officers.
But in response to the demand through a press statement, the IG Japheth Koome refuted claims that the police arrested the Governor adding that the Governor on her own volation boarded a police vehicle and thereafter voluntarily disembarked from the same vehicle.
“In fact, in her own press release dated October 18,2023 does not mention that police arrested her, other than that there was “heavy police” presence in her meeting,” read the statement by the IG.
The incident has left the Governor’s supporters claiming that she was being targeted by some politicians with their political interests while those opposing her claiming that she was faking the arrest to seek sympathy especially now that she is facing a second impeachment by the Meru County Assembly.
