The recently confirmed Tharaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Peter Kinyua Muriungi has launched the construction of a Ksh40 million domestic water project.
According to Prof Muriungi, the water will not only quench the thirst of the university population but also the neighbours who suffer so much especially during the dry spell due to lack of water.
The VC is also advocating for the planting of millions of indigenous trees in the varsity neighborhood in a bid to transform the climate of the area which is dry.
Already the university has grown thousands of trees which have not only turned the environment green and provided ample environment for studies but also set an example for the locals.
Prof Muriungi has promised to grow the institution by developing new market-driven programmes and embarking on increasing student enrolment and expanding infrastructure for the growing population.
“I also want to promote research, develop a solid innovation culture and engage in impactful community outreach programmes,” said Prof Muriungi.
He was the acting vice-chancellor since August last year when the institution was awarded a charter elevating it into a fully-fledged university.
The don has also been running the institution since September 2015 when it was established as a campus of Chuka University and he became the principal in 2017 after it was promoted to a university college.
The institution has featured among top performers in the evaluation of the performance of government ministries, departments and industries. The varsity has also greatly promoted the economy of the once sleepy Gatunga area turning it into a town.
