A police officer accused of shooting dead Tharaka Nithi County Bodaboda Operator’s Chairman Willis Mugambi Kiraku was on Thursday arraigned in Chuka Laws Court.
Mr George Murithi, a corporal at Chuka Police Station appeared before Resident Magistrate Oscar Kinyua but did not take plea.
The court gave police three days to conclude investigations and conduct mental assessment at Chuka County Referral Hospital before producing Murithi in Chuka High Court next week on Tuesday to take plea for murder charges.
The suspect will be taken back to the magistrate court next week on Wednesday to confirm that the orders issued have been adhered to.
“The suspected should be taken for mental assessment and produced in High Court to take plea on May 16, 2023,” said the magistrate.
Mr Mugambi was shot dead during demonstrations in Chuka town on 8th April 2023 leading to heated protests by bodaboda operators from across the county, with elected leaders led by Chuka Igambang’ombe MP Patrick Munene , his Maara counterpart Kareke Mbiuki and County Assembly Speaker John Mbabu together with a host of MCAs demanding the arrest and prosecution of the suspected killer officer.
