Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome has confessed having been approached severally by County Police Commanders with corruption money collected on roads by traffic police officers.
Speaking during a meeting of senior government officials at Kenya School of Government in Nairobi on Friday, Koome said the corruption is called ‘Return’ where junior traffic police officers collect the money which is taken to Corporal, Base Commander, OCPD, and the County Commander up to the bigger offices.
“Several County Police Commanders have even come to my office trying to give me something, but I refused. My colleagues, it comes a time when we say enough is enough. Said IG Koome.
He said the problem has led to condemnation of the entire police flaternity and that a time had come to clean the sector.
Head of Public Service Felix Koskei asked the National Police Service to change and take lead on the war against corruption in the country.
He said the few police officers who are involved in corruption have make it look like the entire police is rotten and that there is an urgent need for change.
He said President William Ruto is determined to ensure that his government is devoid of corruption and wants a police service that will be efficient and effective in his government.
‘We have been having meetings since March this year with institutions, investigative agencies insisting on the importance of ending corruption in the government and that is exactly what I have come to tell you,” said Koskei.
He noted that government has failed to complete several stalled projects across the country because of corruption.
