Tharaka Nithi Government and leaders have been called upon to start program aimed at supporting Cancer survivors in the county.
The Chairlady Neema Cancer warriors Tharaka Nithi, Janis Wanja said that it was unfortunate that cancer warriors were not only struggling with the incurable disease but lacked support that could show them love and encourage them to fight.
She was speaking at Mungoni village, Chuka town during the burial of one of her members, Regina Wanjiku Williams, a revenue officer with Tharaka Nithi County, who succumbed after battling the illness for eight years.
Janice said that it was time they were involved in the discussion about fighting cancer calling upon the leaders to find it in their heart and explore any way they can be assisted.
Tharaka Nithi Speaker John Mbabu who attended the burial conquered with the sentiments and assured support of the warriors as Tharaka Nithi County Assembly.
“The executive are working on various bills on health like epilepsy and I can assure you as an assembly if a bill on cancer support is brought to the assembly we will support it fully,” emphasized the speaker.
His remarks were supported by the area MCA and Budget committee chairman, Godfrey Muriithi who said that it was a timely issue as the public participation on budget was going on where he asked the group to write a memoranda and present it to the committee for discussion.
“We are currently going round receiving opinions and views on the budget from all the wards in the county so do not be left out, come give your views and be heard,” said the MCA.
The leaders eulogized Regina as a real warrior who touched so many lives with her kindness despite suffering from cancer, always treating her clients warmly at the Tharaka Nithi revenue office and at the Huduma center where she was last stationed.
A representative from Texas cancer center where Regina was receiving treatment, added that she has been a beacon of hope to so many cancer patients and survivors where she used to give talks through their support group Uwezo.
Her church and colleagues remembered her for her great faith and love for God, hard work, great friendship while calling upon members of the community to follow her example.
Tharaka Nithi Chief of Staff Mr Muriithi Mbiro said Shiku as they fondly called her, was a very hard working lady who had risen to her rank due to her diligence and commitment despite health challenges.
“We have lost a wonderful person and we pray that God will stand with her family in this trying moments,” he added.
Regina is survived by a husband and a son who will be sitting for his national primary exams later this year whom leaders and friends were urged to support.
