In a major breakthrough against the rampant issue of illicit brew in Tharaka Nithi county, authorities have apprehended three individuals tied to the manufacturing and sale of illegal alcohol.
The operation, carried out on a Monday morning at Ndiruni, not only led to the arrests but also resulted in the dismantling of a massive brewing den associated with a well-known local businessman under the alias “Gitari Boss”.
Tharaka Nithi County Police Commander, Zacheus Ngeno, reported that the raid yielded an astounding haul of over 250,000 liters of illicit brew.
This contraband alcohol, found at the brewing den, was not only confiscated but promptly destroyed, with the police also discovering a stockpile of empty bottles bearing labels from various illegal brands.
The brewing den’s operations extended beyond the mere production of illegal alcohol as authorities also seized unidentified chemicals believed to be part of the illicit brewing process. These chemicals were promptly handed over to the government chemist for thorough analysis.
Ngeno affirmed, “We have detained three individuals who we suspect are employees involved in this illegal operation. They will face charges in court for the production of illicit brew and operating without a valid license.”
It came to light that the alleged mastermind behind the operation, known as “Gitari Boss,” had previously sought official recognition for his brewing endeavors.
However, his application was rejected due to the lack of compliance with county government standards as it was disclosed that the brewing den was situated a mere 10 meters from a religious institution and was far from meeting hygienic requirements.
Tharaka Nithi’s Governor, Muthomi Njuki, has made it a priority to combat the scourge of illicit brew within the county.
Earlier this month, he reassured the public that his administration was steadfast in its commitment to eradicating this menace and regulating the sale of alcoholic beverages.
He issued a stern warning to those engaging in illegal activities, proclaiming, “To the notorious operators who feel they are protected by part of the government, we are coming for you. Don’t misuse the government name because you have a few friends in government.”
The operation serves as a significant step towards reclaiming the community’s well-being and upholding the rule of law in Tharaka Nithi, with the arrests, confiscations, and the destruction of illicit brew sending a strong message that such illicit activities will not be tolerated, and those responsible will be held accountable.
