Electric bicycles are poised to transform transport in Nairobi and other sub-Saharan cities.
Speaking when she visited Ebee, an innovative electric bicycle company based in Amsterdam and operating in Kenya, the country’s First Lady, Rachael Ruto said there are advanced discussions on the areas of partnership.
She said the company has a strong social conscience and commitment to creating sustainable economic opportunities and employment opportunities, especially for young people in developing countries.
“Our engagement is aimed at transforming transport in Nairobi and other major urban centres with the hundred percent electric bicycles,” said Mrs Ruto.
The Ebee Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Joost Boeles said the company focuses on last-mile delivery and has partnerships with major delivery platforms as well as fast food chains.
He noted that they manufacture e-bikes specifically designed for food and light parcel delivery which solves the problem of using expensive vehicles and also brings the problem of congestion in cities and big towns.
“Instead of the traditional two-wheelers, e-bikes are environmentally friendly and versatile for various purposes,” said Mr Boeles.
