Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has demanded an apology and retraction of a story published by The Daily Nation Newspaper and on its digital platform.
The demand letter seen by The Peak, addressed to the Editor-in-chief of Nation Media Group and signed by Ms. Njeri Rugene, the Head of Deputy Presidential Communication Service, stated that the stories headlined: “Gachagua picks a new party amid falling-out with Ruto” and “Ruto-Gachagua tiff: DP Gachagua in search of a new political party outfit,” published on May 29, 2024, are false.
The letter also stated that associating Gachagua with another political party, especially one with a questionable association, could only have been done in bad faith, with the sole intention of undermining the DP’s role as the Deputy Party Leader of the United Democratic Alliance Party.
“The one-sided, false, and concocted story is laced with innuendos and malice,” read part of the demand letter.
Gachagua also said that the stories are deliberately intended to disparage and attack his integrity.
He added that the article clearly violates the tenets of professional journalism, which demand objectivity, balance, and fairness.
“In this regard, we demand a retraction of the fabricated article and an apology with the same prominence,” also read the letter copied to the Chief Executive Officer of the Media Council of Kenya, Mr. David Omwoyo.
