Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki and United Kingdom Security Minister Rt. Hon. Tom Tugendhat have signed the Kenya-UK Security Compact 2023.
The two leaders and other security officials from the two countries held a bilateral talk in Nairobi on Wednesday before signing the pact.
The agreement focuses on community security, prevention of violent extremism, counterterrorism, regional security, immigration crimes, cyber security, serious organised crime, child protection and movement of illicit commodities.
Addressing journalists, the leaders noted the changing face of National, Regional and Global security threats and the need for cooperation and strengthened partnership to tackle these challenges.
Prof Kindiki said the two countries will engage in training of police officers to enhance policing capabilities in order to manage the changing global security situation.
“Training will focus on officers involved in day-to-day policing and tactical units involved in special operations,” said Prof Kindiki.
Mr Tugendhat said the agenda is ambitious and informed by the needs of the citizens living in the two countries.
He pointed out that there are several challenges facing the two countries in regard to sea, land and cyberspace security.
“I thank Kenya for sending troops to King Charles’s coronation ceremony last week. This is a very touching gesture,” said Mr Tugendhat.
