Chuka Vikings RFC showcased their prowess in the KRU Kenya Cup Central Nationwide league as they secured a commanding away victory against local rivals Embu Dragons RFC at the Njukiri Showground grounds.
The match kicked off with Brian Isanda crossing over the try line first, although the subsequent conversion attempt sailed wide, leaving the score at 5-0. Embu Dragons responded with a penalty, narrowing the gap to 5-3.
The momentum shifted when Captain Patrick Babere successfully attempted a goal, extending Chuka Vikings’ lead to 8-3. However, the hosts swiftly retaliated with a penalty, concluding the first half with a tight scoreline of 8-6.
The second half commenced with Captain Babere crossing over for another try, but the conversion missed its mark. Exceptional plays off set pieces allowed Dennis Migiro to make an impressive run from the halfway line, scoring under the posts. Ephraim Otieno ensured the conversion, widening the lead to 20-6.
Relentless pressure on the Embu defense earned Chuka Vikings a penalty, expertly converted by Joshua Clive. Despite a late infringement from the visitors resulting in a penalty for the hosts, the kick at goal fell short, leaving the full-time scores at 23-09 in favor of Chuka Vikings RFC.
Vikings Captain Patrick Babere expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance in the season opener, stating, “The boys gave their all, and we knew this was the win we needed. We thank the university and fans for supporting our campaign and we ask that they continue rallying behind us.”
Looking ahead, Chuka Vikings RFC will host Kiambu RFC on January 13, 2024, in their next fixture, as they aim to build on the momentum gained from their impressive season opener.
