A dangerous cyber-attack was today launched on various online platforms among them the eCitizen portal bringing down or compromising several critical services.
The other services which have been affected are money transfer services Mpesa and KCB Mpesa all hosted by Safaricom.
Confirming the incident, ICT Cabinet Secretary David Owalo said the government’s online services have been seriously affected by the cyber-attack but no data has been lost and that they are doing everything possible to resolve the problem and secure the platforms.
The attack has been executed by lethal hackers who identified themselves as Anonymous Sudan.
The CS said the government is not only coming up with remedial measures to deal with the current situation but also coming up with measures to prevent future attacks.
“There is a cyber-attack by hackers who have identified themselves as Anonymous Sudan and the government is working around the clock to resolve the problem and prevent future attacks,” said Mr Owalo in a press statement.
On social media, Anonymous Sudan has claimed to be targeting more government digital systems.
On social media, Kenyans expressed their disappointment with the attack and challenged the government to invest heavily in modern top-notch cyber technology in preventing such incidences which expose a lot of information both personal and government.
