Chuka University on Monday, 2 September 2024, opened its doors to new students on admission day, welcoming over 5,000 first-year students from across the country.
According to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Henry Mutembei, a total of 5,532 students were placed in the institution by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), with over 5,200 of them already applying for scholarships and loans.
“We are pleased as an institution to receive our first-year students, who have turned out in large numbers. This is the only prophetic university in the world. We have sufficient facilities for the students who are now part of Chuka University, and our lecturers are ready to begin after orientation, which is scheduled for Wednesday,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor thanked President William Ruto for his support to institutions of higher learning and expressed confidence that the government would address the challenges related to the new funding model.
“We encourage students who have been incorrectly placed to appeal and be placed in the correct funding band. After parents and students contribute a portion of their household income, we are left to work with HELB and the University Funding Board. I want to assure parents and students that the government will consider their needs,” Professor Mutembei stated.
In a press briefing, the Vice Chancellor also reassured new students of their safety, noting that the university, in collaboration with the National Government and the County Commissioner, had deployed security personnel to enhance security in the area.
“We have robust security measures in place through the landlords’ association and the Nyumba Kumi initiative. Additionally, we have deployed enough security officers to ensure the safety of all students,” he said.
Henry Rukut, a parent from Nandi County, expressed his satisfaction with the school’s management and praised the efficient registration process.
“We have been warmly received, and we appreciate the increased security. The registration process has been smooth, and we are grateful for the hospitality shown to us by the institution, particularly by the Vice Chancellor,” he said.
“The admission process is going well, and I am happy that Chuka University was prepared to receive us. We are eager and ready to start learning,” said Patricia Nyarangi, a student from Kisii County.
