Nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA) Zacharia Mwaniki has proposed to the County Assembly of Tharaka-Nithi a motion on planting of indigenous trees in line with the National Government’s 30% tree cover campaign by 2032.
According to the MCA, the County Government is yet to establish elaborate measures for the growing and protection of indigenous including involvement of crucial communities such as the community.
The motion, if sails through seeks to have the County Government of Tharaka Nithi set aside land, resources and designated areas in the county to be used in tree planting of the indigenous trees.
“I ask the County Government to collaborate with public institutions like schools and Community Based Organisations on programs on environmental conservation and combating climate change”, he said.
The motion also seeks to have the County Government set aside a day within a calendar year to be known as ” Tharaka Nithi County Tree Planting Day”, dedicated to planting trees in the county.
“Through this motion we will be able to bring back knowledge on indigenous trees and also on how to plant, grow and preserve them. It has also introduced a great structure to plant trees in this county which can also be turned into an economic venture”, MCA Purity Wanja said.
Other MCAs present included Marimanti MCA Kennedy Kamunyu, Nominated MCAs Karuku Wanja, Lucy Muthoni and Mwaura Joel Mwangi all who were in support of the motion.
