In a strong endorsement of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Tharaka Nithi Governor has advocated for its critical role in equipping youth with essential skills for various occupations and driving economic growth through enhanced productivity.
During the opening of the Kajuki Vocational Training Center, the Governor emphasized that TVET paves the way for employment by imparting specialized skills and practical knowledge necessary for both formal and self-employment.
“Countless graduates remain unemployed because white-collar jobs are in short supply. The current job market favors technical skills, which are crucial for our nation’s aspiration to achieve middle-income status. These technical roles will underpin forthcoming projects and developments,” he stated.
Governor Njuki highlighted the significant need for technically skilled workers within devolved governments and stressed the importance of TVET training for obtaining relevant certifications, thereby improving job prospects and professional standards.
“As a government, it is unnecessary to import technical experts from other regions when we have the capacity to train our own. Soon, certification will be a prerequisite for employment in technical fields, making professional training in our institutions imperative,” he added.
The Governor pledged to enhance the institution’s facilities by improving water connectivity through the Kajuki-Kamutiria water project, upgrading the sports field, and recruiting two additional tutors to strengthen the teaching staff. The center currently serves 200 students.
County Assembly Speaker John Mbabu pointed out the vital function of TVET in keeping pace with rapid technological advancements, noting the increasing global demand for skilled and qualified workers.
“I commend the governor for his dedication to advancing TVET in Tharaka Nithi County. His commitment to preparing the youth for the workforce and fostering their personal growth is commendable. This initiative will not only provide hands-on learning experiences but also facilitate quick career starts for the youth,” he remarked.
In addition, the Governor inaugurated the Medical Imaging Department at Kibung’a Level 4 Hospital in Marimanti Ward, aimed at minimizing travel for diagnostic services by offering Dental, X-Ray, and Ultrasound units locally.
