Tharaka Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) George Murugara has called on politicians and leaders in Tharaka-Nithi County to steer clear of divisive politics.
Murugara, who also chairs the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee in Parliament, emphasized the risk of the county being split along tribal lines as politicians begin strategizing for the 2027 general elections.
“This is a very small county with a small population. We are at a point where our unity is at risk, especially now that leaders are already declaring interests for 2027,” he stated.
MP Murugara pointed out that some leaders are using tribal affiliations as a tactic to gain popularity and urged for unity to protect the county’s interests.
“Already, politicians are using the county’s diversity in tribe as a way of dividing residents to incline towards leaders from their own tribes. That is petty politics and bad for our unity,” he remarked.
His statements come in the wake of the ‘One Man, One Vote, One Shilling’ revenue sharing formula debate, where some county leaders have already taken sides.
Avoiding the contentious issue, the MP stressed the importance of a unified county, aligning himself with a group of leaders from Mt Kenya Region who have also distanced themselves from the debate.
The MP gave the remarks during a fundraiser at Chuka Baptist Church.
