Kenya is set to join a select group of African nations as it prepares to roll out monetization options for content creators on Facebook and Instagram, with the implementation slated for June this year.
The announcement came following discussions between Facebook’s President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, and Kenyan President William Ruto at State House Nairobi.
Speaking on the development, Nick Clegg highlighted the significance of the move, stating, “Kenyan content creators who meet the eligibility criteria will now earn from their Facebook and Instagram spaces as we start monetization by June this year.”
President Ruto expressed his satisfaction with the collaboration between Kenya and major digital platforms in enabling content monetization, emphasizing the potential for creators to profit from their creativity.
“Now content creators can begin earning from their imagination and creativity. I have kept my word to negotiate and get them fresh opportunities,” President Ruto remarked, underscoring the government’s commitment to leveraging the digital space to address unemployment among youths.
Additionally, President Ruto welcomed plans to extend monetization features to M-Pesa, further expanding opportunities for Kenyan creators to generate income from their digital endeavors.
