In a thrilling showdown at Kibugua Grounds, Kanyuru FC showcased their prowess, defeating Kibugua FC 5-1 to clinch the coveted WaFestu Tournament title on Sunday.
The action commenced with Remy Mwenda capitalizing on a keeper error in the 5th minute, setting the tone for Kanyuru’s dominance. Ben Junior’s impeccable strike from 20 yards extended their lead in the 20th minute, catching Kibugua FC defenders off guard.
Despite Kibugua’s Master narrowing the gap to 2-1, Kanyuru extinguished their hopes with a perfectly timed free kick in the 43rd minute, courtesy of Sam Junior’s header from Ben Junior’s cross.
The football theatrics continued as Remy Mwenda secured his second goal in the 45th minute, assisted by star player Mbappe, concluding the first half with a commanding 4-1 lead.
Ben Junior’s goal in the 65th minute sealed Kanyuru’s triumph, solidifying their WaFestu Tournament glory and securing a prize of KShs 40,000.
Tharaka Member of Parliament, George Gitonga Murugara, emphasized the moral value of sports during the event, hinting at plans for an integrated football tournament involving teams from three constituencies in the next edition.
Tournament organizer, Alex Mugendi Wa Festu, expressed gratitude to sponsors, players, and fans for the tournament’s success. He pledged continued support for youth through such initiatives, distancing sports from political campaigns.
Wa Festu didn’t shy away from addressing Chuka Igambang’ombe Member of Parliament Patrick Munene, criticizing the lack of a CDF-sponsored league in the constituency. Wa Festu issued a three-month ultimatum for sponsorship.
In the third-place playoffs, Njuri secured a 1-0 victory against Rubate FC, earning KShs 20,000, while Rubate received KShs 10,000.
The ceremony also recognized top scorers, the best goalkeeper, and the most disciplined team, adding a touch of celebration to an unforgettable tournament finale.
