Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba will retain her seat in the Senate, according to a recent decision by Senate Speaker Amason Kingi.
The ruling comes as the Senate is obligated to comply with a High Court’s conservatory order, temporarily halting her suspension.
Senator Orwoba had faced a six-month suspension from the Senate and Parliament premises starting on September 20, 2023.
The suspension was initiated following a report from the Powers and Privileges Committee, which recommended her suspension due to her failure to appear before the committee and substantiate allegations she had made against her colleagues, involving corruption and sexual harassment.
In his announcement, Senate Speaker Kingi declared that Senator Orwoba would be permitted to return to the Senate while awaiting the final resolution of the matter.
He emphasized the Senate’s dissatisfaction with the conservatory order but acknowledged the obligation to adhere to it, reserving the Senate’s right to defend its position in court.
The next stage of the matter is scheduled for October 25, 2023, when further directions will be provided.
Senator Orwoba had been accused of making unsubstantiated claims regarding sexual favors within parliamentary circles and alleging discrimination in Parliament by posting messages on the Senate Business WhatsApp group.
