The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has faulted police officers camouflaging as journalists covering protests in order to arrest demonstrators.
In a press statement, MCK Chief Executive Officer and Secretary to the Council Mr David Omwoyo Omwoyo said impersonation of journalists by the police is a grave unprofessional misconduct on the part of the police and endangers the lives of journalists in the line of duty.
He said while the council appreciates the release of journalists who were earlier arrested while covering the protests, the detaining of journalists was unnecessary, arbitrary and ridiculous.
“The work of journalists is protected under Article 33,34 and 35 of the Constitution, a right that should be respected by all,” read in part the statement.
