There was drama at Marima, Maara Constituency after the chairman of Muguna self-help group that sells dairy milk to Brookside Milk Company took off after receiving their cheque worth Kshs. 1.8 Million
Stella Kithinji one of the members says the group which was started in 2012 with 300 members receives monthly payment from the company and when they missed their payments from April this year they went to ask officials.
“We went and asked Brookside officials why they had not paid us our money and they told us to go ask the chairman Michael Kimathi who they said had already been given the cheque,” she said.
They went to look for him at his house but were told he had gone into hiding after he went to the Sacco and on following up they found out that he had taken a loan using the group and when he banked the cheque their money was used to partly pay the loan.
They say the Sacco now even claims that they still owe them Kshs 822,000 as the secretary denied signing anything or even aware of the transactions.
Today the members while demonstrating against the act went back to his house and took his wife Evelyne Michael whom they frog matched to the police but she could not tell of her husband’s whereabouts.
“We are so shocked and bitter because our children have been sent away from school due to fee balances, while it’s now hard to even cater for the livestock because that’s the money we were relying on.
They have called upon the government to intervene and smoke the culprit from his hiding suspecting he was still in communication with his wife.
They have also requested the milk company to assist in following up, having the chairman arrested and recovering the money.
“We are not employed so all of us depend on the milk we sell and we have been frustrated since last month and we are wondering if the milk we sold this month we will get our money,” added another member.
