The Ministry of Interior and National Administration has committed to de-congest all prisons in the country by 50%.
According to CS Kithure Kindiki, the ministry is set to put in place measures and policies in collaboration with the Judiciary and other stakeholders, encouraging the use of alternative dispute resolution and non-custodial sentences to ease the number of inmates in prisons.
Kindiki noted that the government through private sector partnership was committed to implement the “One prisoner, One bed, One mattress” program, further directing all prisoners be kitted with two pairs of uniform.
During his tour to Mwea Prison on Monday, May 8, 2023, Kindiki said the government will invest Ksh 1billion in modern prison equipment to enable inmates acquire skills and produce modern competitive products.
To match Kenyan prison laws to 21st century standards, Kindiki noted that a new and modern correctional service policy will be in place in the next few months. The policy includes a review of laws on prisons and probation services.
