Traders at Marima stage, Maara Constituency of Tharaka Nithi County have complained of poor sanitation around the trading center.
Addressing The Peak, the traders said the environment they operated their businesses neither had toilets for use or water exposing them to dangerous diseases.
They claim the county government in charge of sanitation in trading centers have remained adamant despite their numerous complaints.
“It is unfortunate that we have to pay levies to the county government or risk being arrested yet they cannot get us water or even construct a good toilet or sanitation block for us,” lamented Kawira Marangu a fruit vendor.
She added that the toilet that was being used was dilapidated pausing a great risk to over 100 traders operating there and their customers.
Martin Njeru who owns a kiosk said it was unfortunate that the government was keen on collecting taxes at least twice per week but failed to give attention to such a crucial demand by the tax payers.
“It’s a shame county government enforcement officers will be going round asking for the daily levies yet they will have no place to relieve themselves if they needed water or visiting the toilet,” he added.
