Twelve people—ten adults and two minors—have been confirmed dead in a grisly road accident at the famous Nithi Bridge Black spot in Tharaka Nithi County.
The Toyota Hiace matatu is said to have moved from it’s lane crossing over to the opposite climbing lane while descending before it had a head-on collision with a Toyota Hilux, killing all the passengers in the Hiace and its driver on the spot.
The Toyota Hiace was traveling to Rongai, in Kajiado County from a ceremony in Kirirwa village of Nkubu, Meru County while the Hilux was transporting beans toward Meru when they collided head-on.
While confirming the accident, Tharaka Nithi Police Commander Zacheaus Ng’eno has cautioned drivers against using the opposite lanes while approaching Nithi Bridge insisting they should stick to their lanes which is clearly indicated.
The accident immediately led to another accident involving a Toyota Sienta heading towards Chuka which is said to have lost its brakes and rammed into a stalled Mount Kenya Milk lorry that had broken down at the scene.
The bodies have been moved to the Chuka Referral Hospital Morgue while survivors in the Toyota Hilux and Sienta rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment as further investigation commence.
